For any of you who regularly watch streams on twitch, this past weekend, you might have seen a few games in the most viewed section that you wouldn’t have expected. “40,000 people watching Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland, what the heck?” The reason for this was a group of guys who get together and show that they are officially better than all of us at video games. A group of guys who stream under the SpeedDemosArchive, speed run games on stream.
The reason that this is so special, is that this marathon, which takes place over 5 days is so special, is that while they speed run all these games, they are accepting donations, and all the money, 100% goes to a charity. In the case of Summer Games Done Quick, all the money went to Doctors Without Borders. People donate said money, towards goals and little minigames in which players can name the horse in Zelda: Twilight Princess, or to Kill or Save the Animals for Super Metroid. So many people donated, that $252.975.64 was raised for this cause. Let me reiterate that. OVER 250,000 dollars was raised by kids just playing video games. Next time anyone tells you, video games have no benefit, just tell them, they save lives.
The other reason that this even was so entertaining and exciting was the fact that these guys really made you interested in speed running games, you never thought possible. I personally know a few people who became inspired to try speed running after watching this marathon. Watching people play through Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess, or Super Metroid, or Double Dragon, or Luigi’s Mansion, or Diddy Kong Racing. Over these 5 days, these guys beat 91 games in 108 hours and 48 minues. They beat almost a game an hour, and most are no small games either. A full list is available at http://gamesdonequick.com/tracker/runs/8.
Be on the lookout for these guys in the future. Check them out. Donate some cash. And let them know what a great job these guys are doing.
