NUReviews’ Games of the Year 2012!

Happy New Year, everyone! Somehow, all of us at NUReviews managed to survive 2012. Of course, I’m talking about the year, although I don’t think Squeak made it through the movie (He will be missed?). Anyways, instead of doing a top 5 or 10 list, we’re having everyone talk about their favorite game, because we’re subjective pansies like that. So here we go!

Brad’s Game of the Year: Max Anarchy (Anarcy Reigns)
Crazy gameplay and fun characters meets engaging multiplayer modes, Platinum Games hit the nail on the head with this title. While not released in the west until early 2013, this import hits my number one spot for GOTY.
Runners Up: Kid Icarus, Transformers Fall of Cybertron

Ted’s Game of the Year: Katawa Shoujo
What started off as more of a 4chan joke, became more of a testament to a community coming together to make a game. Although it’s mainly a visual novel, this game doesn’t thrive on gameplay but on the story and impact it had on players. Nothing more than a memory and still more of a joke amongst people who know about it, Katawa Shoujo may not be GOTY anyone but myself. But I would definitely consider it the most memorable game I’ve played this year.
Runner Up: XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Alex’s Game of the Year: Forza Horizon
This is the ultimate racing game currently on the Xbox. The variety of vehicles, landscapes, and massive open world make this a standout. Even better is the custom painting features which can unlock the inner artist. A market place for different decal setups, as well a solid multiplayer experience and the ability to turn off ALL hud features for dat der immersion makes it the end all racing game for me. Purists and race track junkies will be disappointing by this games made up roads as well lack of fine tuning specific mods however this game is just too great to even let that be a factor for me. 10/10 would play till death or horizon 2.

Runner Up: Far Cry 3

Sameer’s Game of the Year: Mass Effect 3

Mass Effect 3 is my game of the year. Why? It  ended the story of one of my favorite video games characters, Commander Shepherd. Seeing how this game has received a lot of hate for its ending, it was still had a good story line, good game mechanics, and an online multiplayer that works well (which all of the online DLC has been free).

Runners Up: Kid Icarus, Borderlands 2, Halo 4, Max Payne 3
Steve’s Game of the Year: Kid Icarus: Uprising
This game reminded me why I adore Masahiro Sakurai’s game philosophy: make a game that is not only great, but jam packed with content; and boy, does this game have content. The single player campaign allows for a lot of replayability. The story is enjoyable, and is filled with snarky humor and Nintendo references. The online multiplayer is very intense, whether you do free for all or teams. If you are considering getting a 3DS, be sure to pick this game up.
Runners Up: Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward, Katawa Shoujo
